1x6 Tongue and Groove Paneling

Our 1x6 T&G Paneling is available in Douglas fir or Western SPF. The material is kiln-dried and precision milled with a reversible V-Joint on one side and a Nickel Gap on the other. These products are also End-Matched which means that they have tongue and groove joints on the ends of the boards as well, similar to hardwood flooring.

1x6 T&G paneling can be used for wall cladding, soffits and ceilings, covered porch roofs, and accent walls.

Western SPF or Douglas Fir?

Both Western SPF and Douglas fir are fine material choices for 1x6 T&G boards. Douglas fir is going to have a more vibrant grain pattern than the Western SPF, with the biggest difference being in the raw colour of the material itself.

Western SPF (Spruce Pine Fir) contains primarily:

  • Engelmann Spruce
  • Lodgepole Pine
  • Alpine Fir

Each of the above species is very pale in colour, with a much more uniform appearance.

Douglas Fir has a reddy brown natural colour, with the early wood having quite a bit of pink/salmon undertones.

In general, both products will take stains very well. However, if a specific colour is required, the more neutral undertone of the SPF may be preferred.

Why End-Matched 1x6 Tongue and Groove?

Contractors and builders rely on end-matched tongue and groove for its ease of use and refined finish. It’s the perfect solution for projects that need both speed and quality.

Key advantages include:

  • Efficient installation – Boards lock together quickly with a tight fit.

  • Durable and stable – Kiln-dried lumber resists warping, cupping, or shrinking.

  • Smooth, clean look – The interlocking design creates uniform joints with no cutting to fit on a stud or ceiling joist.

  • Flexible finish options – Stain, seal, or paint to match any design.

  • Minimal waste – Consistent milling reduces sorting and trimming on-site.

Whether you're wrapping up a custom cottage, framing out a ceiling, or finishing a basement, 1x6 tongue and groove can help give that wow factor you're looking for.

What is 1x6 Tongue and Groove Paneling?

1x6 tongue and groove paneling is a popular finishing material made from softwood boards that are nominally 1 inch thick and 6 inches wide. The finished dimensions of our tongue and groove boards are 3/4" thick with a 5" finished face. Each board is milled with a tongue on one edge and a groove on the other, allowing them to interlock securely during installation. This creates a tight, seamless fit with minimal visible gaps—ideal for professional-grade interior and exterior finishes.

At Northern Pines Lumber, our tongue and groove paneling is kiln-dried for dimensional stability, milled to precise specs, and ready for fast, clean installation.
